Everyone is a member in good-standing of a prominent French family, or (if a foreigner) be so close to a French family that you’re practically a member. They may be upper-class (nobility) or middle-class (trades).
Advancing your family fortunes should be one of your character’s goals. Your parents will still be alive at the start of the game, and you will have at least one brother and one sister. You need to get along with them well enough to attend family gatherings and want to advance your fortunes. You don’t have to like them.
You don’t need to be married, but those who are married will receive a bonus of +3 Influence and 5000 Gold at the start of the game.
More than one player may belong to the same family. Players will also need to determine a rival family. Players may belong to each other's rival families.
This is the start of the age of heraldry. The player is encouraged to invent a simple family coats of arms. You might even get a benefit from it (hint, hint).
