Equestrus Crepusculi

Formed after the First Crusade by Phillip of Reims, youngest son of Stephen of Blois, the Equestrus Crepusculi ("Knights of the Twilight") pledged themselves to perform whatever sin needed to be committed for the armies of Christendom in order to assure the Crusade's success. These maraudering knights, based in France and the Holy Land, swear an oath pledging their souls to eternal torment in Hell, so others need not share their fate.

In the half-century that's followed their founding, these infamous knights have drifted away from their core values, but only in their devotion to the Christian cause, not in their methods. Tolerated but despised by the French crown and the Church, the Equestrus Crepuscali include nobles from numerous French families and probably number in the hundreds (not including retainers). They are rumored to participate in unholy rites and have sworn Allegiance to the Dark.

Their current leader, Sir Guy d'Anjou, is a former retainer of King Henry II who was outlawed for acts of alleged cruelty. The Order has switched loyalties from France to Burgundy to England and back to France over the last century, but the number of powerful knights has made it difficult for their enemies to take direct action against them.

The Order is known to employ blackguards, whose number includes Sir Guy.
